Hello my name is Annie and I have had a celebrity crush for 5 days. I am not proud of this. It’s like my inner middle schooler is making a comeback.

This is Juanes. He’s Colombian pop/rock star who writes incredibly catchy songs with lots of loud guitar. He’s also probably the most famous musician in Latin America right now. So famous that I had a bunch of his music before I even got here, and, as you might guess from my travel songs, I normally prefer music that was written at least 20 years ago. Not to mention in English.

But listening to music in Spanish is horribly addicting. I understand some but not all of it, so it becomes more mysterious and inherently more interesting. I actually have to look up words and/or resort to wikipedia to understand the finer points of the lyrics, so figuring them out is just the coolest feeling.

However, liking Juanes in Chile seems to be about as cool as liking Justin Timberlake in the States. It’s a little too mainstream (unless you are a 15 year old girl, then it doesn’t matter). But I’m convinced that this isn’t quite as bad as a 7th grade celebrity crush because I’m actually really into the music. It’s not only about hair and abs. (Unlike certain Vice Presidential candidates, “Joe Six Packs” don’t really appeal to me.) Juanes, on the other hand, writes some great songs and is a major activist trying to eradicate land mines in Colombia. And yes he’s incredibly attractive. I’m hooked, even if it makes me uncool by Chilean standards.

  • I don’t think it makes you uncool, only with music snobs actually. Uncool would be you liking RBD, Kudai or I don’t know, Belanova. Juanes is ok, and his songs belong to a “good” pop category, in my opinion. Mind you, I mostly like songs written more than 20 years ago too… way more than 20 years ago, but I still dig some Juanes once in a while.

  • oh annie you’re so funny.
